When we think of a weekend break on the continent, it’s normally the likes of Paris and Amsterdam that spring to mind. But with an ever-growing array of European destinations available from UK airports, there are some great alternatives that are well worth considering.

One such hidden gem is the Estonian capital, Tallinn. Rapidly gaining a reputation as the ‘new Prague’, Tallinn is a city immersed in history and architectural beauty and, located on the Baltic coast just 30 miles from Helsinki, it is the embodiment of the phrase ‘East meets West’.

Places to Go in Estonia

You may not be accustomed immediately with Estonia but it does not mean that it isn’t worth visiting. Occasionally the things you hardly know about are the greatest treasures on earth.

Estonia is another land found in Northeastern Europe that follows the Finnish language. It lies on the east coast shores on the Baltic Sea and has a temperate climate for the majority with the year. The region is separated into fifteen counties and carries a democratic parliamentary republic for its government system.

A Baltic Cruise – Part Two – Estonia

On Friday we took a short cab ride from our Copenhagen hotel to our ship for embarkation procedures. The Rotterdam, Holland America’s flagship was launched in 1997, has a gross tonnage of 59,000 and holds 1600 passengers. That means it’s not one of the mega-cruise ships plying the seas. In November, 2009 the ship is due to go to Freeport in the Bahamas for a lot of refurbishing.

The passengers tend to be middle-aged and older, with a sprinkling of canes, walkers and wheelchairs. The crew does very well catering to the needs of this older bunch so it’s a pleasant experience.

Amongst the Baltic States, Estonia is the smallest country with a population of 1.7 million. Tallinn is the capital of the country and is a small city having about half a million inhabitants. The city of the Danes, as the word Tallinn means, tells the story if the country’s history. At present, Tallinn is full of people of many nationalities and this old Hansa city is surrounded by a 2.5 kilometers of stone wall, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Tallinn offers its visitors with many museums, small restaurants and galleries displaying new Estonian Art. The town is known for its international yachting events of the 1980 Olympic Games. The National Singing Stadium, on the outskirts of the city, holds world renowned song festivals, which is one of the attractions for the tourists in Estonia.

Estonia is a low lying country with forests, lakes and many rivers, most of which are draining into the Gulf of Finland to the north or eastward into Lake Peipus, its largest lake. Being separated by the narrow Gulf of Finland with Finland, it has strong cultural and linguistic ties with the country. When you visit Estonia, you will see the old soviet army barracks of the yester years, which was once off-limits even to the Estonian themselves. You will also find the modern Estonia, which is presently a member of the European Union, where 67% of its citizens voted in favour of joining the Union.
